Price guide Priceonomics examines the cost of cracking your phone, and by their measures, a cracked phone isn't exactly as catastrophic as you might think. For example, if you've got an iPhone you can fix a broken screen yourself with a kit or send it in to a service like iCracked or iFix, and the cost of fixing it will add roughly $150 to the resale price of the phone (minus the price of the kit, which can be around $100).
Factor in the cost of a nice case, however, and the numbers for buying a case aren't necessarily that compelling. Ultimately it's a choice that probably has more to do with aesthetics than economics, though, so weigh in:
