Phone cases are a double-edged sword. Yes, they can help protect your precious screen, but they also add bulk to your device, can make the buttons tougher to access, and, almost without exception, make your phone that much uglier. So, who's using one? Price guide Priceonomics examines the cost of cracking your phone, and by their measures, a cracked phone isn't exactly as catastrophic as you might think. For example, if you've got an iPhone you can fix a broken screen yourself with a kit or send it in to a service like iCracked or iFix, and the cost of fixing it will add roughly $150 to the resale price of the phone (minus the price of the kit, which can be around $100).
Factor in the cost of a nice case, however, and the numbers for buying a case aren't necessarily that compelling. Ultimately it's a choice that probably has more to do with aesthetics than economics, though, so weigh in:
