NPD DisplaySearch, the agency that tries to be on top of all things display, forecasts up to 23 million shipments of QHD (1440x2560) smartphones in 2015. Ultra HD displays will account for more than 5% of smartphone shipments in North America and Japan in 2015, and on the brink of 5% in western Europe. Thus, if you purchase a QHD phone in 2015, you will become part of the 5%.For the rest of the display society, the agency forecasts global shipments of smartphones with 720p and 1080p screens to reach 570 million, while QHD phones are expected to reach 41 million in 2014. According to the firm, AU Optronics, JDI, Samsung Display, and other companies already have QHD displays primed for the market. Samsung has confirmed it has a production-ready QHD display with a pixel density of 560 PPI. The same goes for chipset manufacturers, who already have CPU and GPU solutions with the pixel-pushing muscle needed to power said screens.
As battery life concerns run rampant in regards to these big, pixel-dense next-generation displays, DisplaySearch senior analyst Tina Teng claims that "increasingly affordable application processors" will enable manufacturers to provide "greater resolution and lower power consumption". Let's hope that rings true.
The first QHD smartphone, Vivo Xplay3s, will be launched soon in China.
