Apple confirmed to be testing new iPad mini model without Retina display »:
iPad Mini 2 Specs
You know that fantastic sounding next-generation Kindle Fire HD with a high-resolution display Amazon is cooking up? And the new high-res Nexus 7 that Google just debuted? As some had suspected, it looks like these new slates might not have any bite-sized high-resolution competition from Apple this year. According to information buried in iOS 7 beta 4 code uncovered by a source speaking with 9to5Mac, Apple is indeed testing a new iPad mini model that features a faster A6 processor but no Retina display. This is likely just one of many iPad mini models Apple is testing of course, but multiple earlier reports claiming a low-resolution second-generation iPad mini would launch in 2013 ahead of a new Retina model next year suggest this new Retinaless model could in fact be Apple's next iPad mini. A screenshot of some of the iOS 7 beta 4 code in question follows below.

Moto X Magic Glass photos leak

Moto X Magic Glass photos leak:
Moto X Magic Glass photos leak

Just a few days ago, Moto X leaker extraordinaire Taylor Wimberly came out saying that the Motorola Moto X would have something called "Magic Glass", which is Motorola's way to make the display glass and handset body feel continuous using a single layer of Gorilla Glass that has been molded to a special polymer. It sounds good, and now we're seeing some high quality photos of the Magic Glass component.

The images of the Magic Glass component come from Fanatic Fone, and they show that the construction should lead to exactly what Motorola wants: a seamless transition from glass to edge; and, assuming the zero-gap construction for the backplate is as good as intended, the Moto X could feel smooth all around.

Dell Project Ophelia Release Date
Dell is said to be working on a new device under the code-name "Project Ophelia," and reports suggest it will essentially be an Android-powered computer on a USB stick.  The struggling PC vendor will apparently use Ophelia to help reinvent itself as company founder Michael Dell continues his efforts to take Dell private, and now the computer on a stick is one step closer to launching. According to a recent report from IDG News Service, Dell's Project Ophelia "can turn any screen or display with an HDMI port into a PC, gaming machine, or streaming media player," and it is now shipping to beta testers ahead of a public release scheduled for this fall. The device will be priced around $100, IDG claims.

EXCLUSIVE: Full specs and everything else you need to know about Amazon's next-gen Kindle Fire HD tablets »:
Amazon Kindle Fire HD 2013 Specs
Amazon to combine powerhouse specs and affordable prices in bid to scorch the competition

Amazon's first-generation Kindle Fire was absolutely not an iPad killer, and that's exactly why it was so successful. The online retail giant sought not to compete with Apple's juggernaut but rather to open a new door, one that would focus on a more compact design and far more affordable pricing. At $499, the iPad was a tremendous value. At $199, the Kindle Fire was a steal. But the Kindle Fire was just the beginning and affordability alone would only take Amazon so far. The company's current Kindle Fire HD models were the result of that realization, though they were merely the tip of the iceberg. With its next-generation Kindle Fire HD tablets that are set to debut this fall, Amazon is taking things to a completely different level — and its rivals should be worried.

BlackBerry’s U.S. market share plummets to just 1% in Q2 despite Z10, Q10 push »:
US Smartphone Market Share Q2 2013
The second calendar quarter marked the first in which BlackBerry's debut BlackBerry 10 smartphone, the Z10, was on store shelves for the entire quarter. It was also the launch quarter of the vendor's new BlackBerry Q10, its first next-generation handset with a full QWERTY keyboard. But during the second quarter, new data from market research firm Kantar Worldpanel suggests that BlackBerry's U.S. market share tumbled to just 1.1% from 4% in the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, the firm says Apple's share of U.S. smartphone sales grew to 42.5% from 39.2% in the same quarter last year despite the fact that no new iPhone has launched since last September, and Android's share of smartphone sales fell to 51.5% from 52.6% in Q2 2012.

Intel’s TV game-changer: DVR that records everything, all the time »:
Intel Cloud DVR
What if TV aired on your schedule, all day, every day? This is the reality Intel will reportedly try to create with its upcoming pay TV service. Add-ons like on-demand content and local DVR services from current pay TV providers are a nice convenience, but Intel will reportedly look to take things to the next level by providing a cloud-based DVR service that records everything, all the time. According to The Wall Street Journal, the killer feature of Intel's forthcoming pay TV service will "include a server farm to record every piece of programming aired—local, national and international—and store it for at least three days in the 'cloud.' " The paper noted that by using Intel's set-top box, TV subscribers will not have to manually schedule recordings or even own a DVR. According to an earlier report, Intel's service will also utilize a video camera and other technology to monitor people's viewing habits and serve targeted advertisements.

Low-cost plastic-clad iPhone mentioned in China Labor Watch report
Remember that China Labor Watch report we recently covered? After digging further into the document, 9to5Mac's unearthed more possible evidence about that often leaked, low-cost plastic-clad iPhone. The introduction states:
Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones.
Then, on page 27:
Today's work is to paste protective film on the iPhone's plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. [...] The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important.
Of course, there's no definitive proof that Apple will be launching a more affordable iPhone made of polycarbonate -- after all the company might just be testing prototypes that are not destined to market. Still, the information in this report sure gives all these recent iPhone rumors a lot more merit.
