Corning's new Gorilla Glass 5 is meant to survive epic smartphone drops | The Verge: "Corning's new Gorilla Glass 5 is meant to survive epic smartphone drops"

'via Blog this'

Glassmaker Corning just unveiled its newest version of Gorilla Glass, the chemically strengthened super glass that dozens of consumer electronics makers use in their devices.

Called Gorilla Glass 5, the new glass was formulated to improve drop performance from gadgets that are dropped onto rough surfaces from certain heights — specifically, waist height to shoulder height. Selfie-fumblers rejoice: Corning says Gorilla Glass 5 survives up to 80 percent of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters.
The new glass is the successor to Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which was introduced in the fall of 2014. Gorilla Glass 4 was said to be twice as tough as the previous version of its glass and twice as likely to survive drops onto uneven surfaces — but only from about a meter high.

Apple’s Mac lineup is getting incredibly stale

Apple’s Mac lineup is getting incredibly stale:

Mac Sales
I should start off with a disclaimer: we as consumers have gotten incredibly spoiled over the last 10 years. Thanks in large part to the iPhone's annual refresh cycle, we've been unwittingly programmed to view any piece of hardware that's more than a year old as old news, even ancient. We all want faster machines, improved display technologies, and battery life than can last for days on end. And whereas we used to patiently wait for exciting new hardware innovations and products, the tech world today vociferously demands it now.

Digitimes report claims that Apple suppliers are facing pressure from Apple to reduce costs, with major players like Foxconn and Pegatron affected. Apple is in some cases adding suppliers into the mix to help drive down pricing. It was recently reported that Sharp was gearing up to compete with Samsung and LG for the OLED displays Apple is expected to use for future iPhones.

Currently, Largan is facing strong competition from Japan-based Kantatsu over camera module orders, while Foxconn and Pegatron are seeing Apple adding new ODM partners such as Wistron for the production of its new iPhone.

Taiwan’s printed circuit board (PCB) players are also competing aggressively over Apple’s orders by cutting prices.

Apple betting big on the glass iPhone 8? Samsung said to ship 40 million AMOLED panels for it

Apple betting big on the glass iPhone 8? Samsung said to ship 40 million AMOLED panels for it:

Apple may be planning a grand return to the phone industry disruption game next year, if various analysts and assorted rumormongers are any indication, with an all-glass iPhone that could have a curved display aspect for reasons known only to Apple for now. Well, curved screen would mean only one thing - Apple will be using flexible AMOLED screens for that model - and the speculation is rife that Samsung is poised to supply it with up to 100 million 5.5" sheets for the task at hand.

Of course, not everything will be delivered at once, as it is allegedly a three year contract ...
