Steve Jobs has been gone for a year, but his company is carrying on his proud tradition, at least according to the 2,200 consumers Forbes surveyed to determine the magazine’s 25 most inspiring companies of 2012.
Good thing they surveyed peopled before the iPhone 5′s current kerfuffle, ScuffGate.
The questionnaire asked consumers not only which companies they found most inspiring but also to describe their latest encounter with each company. As we reported on yesterday and today, some consumers’ latest encounter is an iPhone 5 damaged right out of the box, sort of like professionally ripped, preaged jeans.
More seriously, Apple is a pretty big source of inspiration. Led by Jobs, the company has over its history revolutionized the computing industry, the music industry, the telephone, and the mobile computer — all of which has led to stunning commercial success, including an almost obscene bank balance of $124 billion, a market capitalization of $631 billion, and the title of most valuable company in the world.
Some of the other companies on the list of course, particularly Walmart, which came in at number two, make me question the value of the survey. Costco shows up in 12th position, and department store Kolhs and home hardware outlet Home Depot are also on the list.
But Apple is joined by old rival Microsoft, in fifth, and new frenemy — well, more enemy than friend, lately — Google, at four. So perhaps the list is not all bunk.
Here are Forbes’ top 10:
- Apple
- Walmart
- Target
- Microsoft
- Amazon
- Chick-fil-A
- Starbucks
- McDonald’s
- Coca-Cola
