Just how scratch-resistant is the anodized aluminum on the black and slate iPhone 5? Apparently, not very. As with previous generation iPod nano and iPod classic devices that had anodized aluminum cases, the coating eventually wears off. According to Overclockers UK member “sharingan_sasuk” who took a Liquidmetal SIM card tray pin to his black iPhone 5′s aluminum back and used a set of keys to scruff the “chamfered edges,” the iPhone 5 is really easy to scruff up. He provided the above photo as “proof” of the iPhone 5′s flaw. While the aluminum on the white and silver iPhone 5 is identical to the black and slate model, scratches should be less noticeable because the material isn’t coated with any color. Is this the beginning of “Scratchgate?” Apple (AAPL) can certainly do without more bad news this week after all the negative press it’s been getting for its terrible new Maps app. Then again, this might just fall into the “obvious” category — if you gouge anodized metal with a sharp object, it will scratch.
