FAA to allow personal electronic devices during takeoff and touchdown
FAA to allow personal electronic devices during takeoff and touchdown: Sure it's not healthy, but we admit that we get a bit shaky in the time it takes to complete our final descent. We've read all of SkyMall, and it's just too hard to be away from the warming glow of our Kindle Paperwhite. Thankfully, however, the FAA has finally pulled the trigger on the long-awaited ...

Nexus 5: A Pure Google Dream Phone That's a Crazy Good Deal
Nexus 5: A Pure Google Dream Phone That's a Crazy Good Deal:
We found out just about everything about the Nexus 5 over the past several weeks thanks to leakafterendlessleak. Today Google finally revealed its horribly kept secret, and there are very few surprises. Here's what you need to know.
Specs
The LG phone has 2GB of RAM and is packed with a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 chip, which is like muscle car specs in a smartphone. Its a quad-core chip that has a bonus core that lets you do stuff while the rest of the phone is asleep, which gives you a little help with battery life.
The back camera has an 8MP shooter and there's a 1.2MP lens on the front, which is disappointingly, the same as the Nexus 4's hot mess. However, the camera has some new features that might make it perform better.
Finally, the device has LTE support for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, HSPA+ bands plus GSM and CDMA, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC tech, and Qi wireless charging.

Design
The Nexus 5 has grown a little bit since its Nexus 4 predecessor. It has a 5-inch, 441 PPI, full HD display. It's thinner, lighter, of course has a bigger screen, a horizontal Nexus logo, and a much bigger camera lens.Specs

Pricing
Once again, this is an area where the Nexus 5 matches up pretty well with the 4. It's $350 for the 16GB off contract and $400 for the new 32GB version. You can pick it up from the Google Play store starting now.Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Growth of Android tablets sales in Q3 cut Apple’s market share to less than 30%
Growth of Android tablets sales in Q3 cut Apple’s market share to less than 30%:
In IDC’s report released today covering worldwide tablet market for the third quarter, the research firm notes that the market as a whole continues to grow thanks to strong growth from Android tablets. Apple shipments remained steady during the quarter compared to last year at 14 million units in Q3, but its share of the market drops from 40.2% last year to just 29.6% this year as Samsung, Asus, Lenovo, and Acer all post significant growth for the quarter compared to the same quarter last year.
Samsung is up from 12.4% last year to 20.4% of the tablet market in Q3 2013 (a 123% increase), while Asus is up 53.9% to 3.5 million units, Lenovo sold 2.3m (up 420.7%), and Acer recorded 1.2M (up 346.3%):
We’ll have to wait to see numbers from the current quarter to see if Apple’s launch of new iPad models will help it increase its lead during the fourth quarter. It’s bound to gain back some of its market share with sales of the new iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, but Android tablets have been gaining every quarter. Last year Apple had over 40% market share in Q4.

Samsung once again secured the second position with shipments of about 9.7 million units. The company, which owes a measure of its tablet success to its ability to bundle them with other successful Samsung products, such as smartphones and televisions, grabbed 20.4% of the worldwide market. ASUS, which makes the Nexus 7 for Google, shipped about 3.5 million total units during the quarter for a third place finish and 7.4% market share. PC powerhouse Lenovo moved into the number four tablet spot with shipments of 2.3 million units and a 4.8% share. Finally, Acer rounded out the top five with 1.2 million units shipped and a 2.5% share. Notably, vendors from outside the top five were responsible for over one third of the shipments in 3Q13. IDC tracks dozens of tablet vendors, and this quarter “Others” represents a combination of major vendors (such as Amazon, Microsoft, HP, and Dell) and lesser-known, so-called white box vendors that typically sell ultra-low cost Android devices at often unsustainably low margins.Making up the rest of the market, around 35.3%, is the other category with 16.8M units during the quarter. Those tablets consist of many unauthorized and inexpensive Android tablets as well as tablets from Amazon, Microsoft, HP, and Dell.

The Relative Screen Resolutions of Your Favorite Devices in One Chart:
The display on your phone is relatively tiny. But in pixels, it's friggin' huge. That's the beauty of high resolution. So how would that phone screen compare to your TV, or your tablet or your laptop if it was spread out to a similarly-sized screen? Doghouse Diaries made this graphic to show you, and it's kind of nuts.

iPad Airs start arriving at Apple Stores and resellers as supply expected to be plentiful
iPad Airs start arriving at Apple Stores and resellers as supply expected to be plentiful:
iPad Air units have begun arriving at Apple Stores and resellers across the world ahead of this Friday’s official launch, according to several sources. Additionally, a reader has spotted that iPad Airs have begun arriving at Walmart locations (see image above) and the device seems to have already been placed inside of one-store’s glass casing for iPads. The special $479 price point can be seen on the sticker on the iPad Air’s packaging.
At Apple Stores, we’ve heard that multiple large stores across the United States have already received upwards of 500 units of the iPad Air, indicating that the supply of the new tablet will likely be plentiful at launch. We’ve heard similar from resellers of iPads internationally with some chains indicating that they will have a solid number of iPad Airs on tap for Friday. These stores say even more supply is promised for the next couple of weeks…
The iPhone 5s notably launched in a constrained fashion with many potential customers unable to secure the storage capacity and/or color of their choice on the September 20th launch day (or even several days afterward). It seems likely that problem will not occur on November 1st. Apple is said to be allowing customers to order their iPad Air online and pick it up in-store after 12PM beginning on the 1st.
The iPad Air is a substantial update over the preceding fourth-generation iPad, and it includes a thinner and lighter design, stronger A7 processor, and comes bundled with iOS 7. Apple is launching the iPad mini with Retina display later this month, and that device is said to be seeing constraints due to manufacturing issues with displays.
